Exceptional Children (EC)

Support for Diverse Learners

Brevard Academy is a small K–8 charter school that serves students with a wide range of strengths and needs as part of our regular program. Some students receive additional support through Exceptional Children (EC) services when they qualify for special education under state and federal guidelines.

Our Exceptional Children (EC) Team

Our EC team works alongside classroom teachers to support students during the school day. Roles include:

  • EC Coordinator – Oversees special education processes and services

  • EC Teacher – Provides specialized instruction and collaborates with classroom teachers

  • EC Instructional Assistants – Support students in classrooms and small groups

  • Related Service Providers – Speech, occupational and physical therapists serve students as needed under their IEPs

If You Have Concerns

If you are worried about your child’s learning, behavior, or development, the first step is to talk with your child’s teacher. The teacher and school team may try classroom strategies and other supports and share how your child is doing over time.

If concerns continue, you may request that the school consider a special education evaluation. We follow North Carolina’s special education process, which includes evaluations, an eligibility decision, and an Individualized Education Program (IEP) if your child qualifies.

Our Approach

Most support happens in the regular classroom through collaboration between EC staff and teachers, with a full range of services available based on each student’s IEP needs. Some students may receive small-group or pull-out instruction, accommodations, or related services.

We review IEPs at least once a year and share progress with families throughout the year. Our goal is to keep supports as seamless and integrated as possible within our close-knit school community.
