Jonathan Fariss
My name is Jonathan Fariss and I am excited to be exploring science concepts with the future 7th and 8th grade students at Brevard Academy this year! I am a recent graduate from Appalachian State University, earning my Bachelors' in Middle Grades Education with a concentration in Science and Math.
I am from the small town of Hillsville, Virginia, about 20 minutes north of Mount Airy, NC. Growing up in the Appalachian mountains has given me a love and appreciation for everything nature has to offer. On the weekend, you may find me hiking or fly fishing in the surrounding area. I will often start each Saturday with a trip to the farmers market in downtown Brevard with my wife.
Upon graduating from high school, I joined the U.S. Airforce and spent 6 years as an Aircraft Loadmaster stationed at Dover, AFB in Delaware. During my time in the military, I was fortunate enough to be chosen to work with NASA to move parts of the James Webb Space Telescope in their preparations for a launch date in December 2021. Additionally, I was tasked with loading and moving the presidential motorcade when the president was traveling. These experiences have given me a passion and excitement for the opportunities that STEM can provide our youth and the real-world experience that I will bring to our classroom.
